NoMAA’s 2024 Small Grants for Individual Artists

Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance

DEADLINE EXTENDED April 19, 11:59pm / grants up to $5,000

Ten (10) grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to uptown artists for new or in-progress projects at any stage of development. Grantees will also receive free use of NoMAA’s rehearsal studios at 176/Broadway for the funded project.

2022-2023 awardees will not be eligible for the 2024 grants.

A complete application will include:

1- ARTIST INFORMATION Contact information, artist statement, resume.

2 – PROJECT INFORMATION
2a – Project Narrative (up to 500 words). Describe the concept of the work (what you want to do); the execution (how you will do it); the significance of this project (how will it benefit your career and/or your field, and/or community); and the objective (what you intend to do with the new work). Include a project timetable (anticipated start and completion dates) and marketing/outreach plan, if applicable. Please state clearly what part of the project will be covered by the NoMAA grant.  
2b – Project Budget Download the budget template here. Submit a PDF of your completed budget form with both expenses and income for the entire project, not just the amount of funding requested from NoMAA. List any pending income as pending.

3 – WORK SAMPLES Description by discipline below. Optional supplemental materials.

WORK SAMPLE DESCRIPTIONS:

Visual Arts 

  1. Three (3) to five (5) digital images of recent work (past 3 years). Format: JPG or PNG, 1-2mb. Name files so they are displayed in the same order as listed on the checklist. Each filename should read as: “YourName#.png” (EXAMPLE: YourName1.jpg, YourName2.jpg, etc.) 
  2. Checklist for the digital images with title of work, date completed, medium, dimensions for each work. 

Playwriting/Screenwriting 

  1. Writing sample of recent work (past 3 years). No more than 5 pages, plus title page and character breakdown. 

Media (Computer/Digital Arts; Film/Video) & Theater/Choreography 

  1. Submit 2-4 minutes of recent work (past 3 years) by direct links hosted on an external website (YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, etc.). Please submit complete works and cue section to be reviewed. 
  2. Label sample with your name, title of work, total running time and production credits. 

Musical Composition 

  1. Submit up to 2 compositions (2-4 minutes each) of recent work (past 3 years) by direct links hosted on an external website (YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, etc.). Please submit complete works and cue section to be reviewed. 
  2. Corresponding written scores, if applicable. 

Notes on work samples:
*** Make sure your links to work samples are viewable without a login and are NOT private. 
*** The jury will review your media from the time-stamped URL in your link and will only review up to 4 minutes. Tutorial on How to Create a Link to a Specific Time in a YouTube Video

The residency requirement is: West Harlem, Washington Heights or Inwood residents (W125th to W155th St. from Edgecombe Ave. west to the Hudson River; W155th St. to W220th St. river-to-river). You will be asked to provide proof of residency.
