Translocal Feminist Film Series: Immigrant Women: Resisting & Re-Existing

Join us for “Immigrant Women: resisting and re-existing”, our annual outdoor Translocal Feminist Film Series that, on its fifth run, has become a summer and uptown staple.

As the criminalization of immigrant communities intensifies and our already precarious access to basic social services is curtailed, we have curated a list of films that highlight the intersecting character of our struggles–whether those over labor rights, access to social services, and against surveillance, detention and deportation.

Our Film Series also celebrates the resilience, friendship, solidarity and hybridness of our communities and, in particular, of women and gender expansive people.

Join us August 30th for a bilingual (English/Spanish) screening of:

🪶Hummingbirds (2024) dir Estefanía “Beba” Contreras & Silvia Del Carmen Castaños, run time 75 mins

In Hummingbirds, Silvia and Beba tell their own coming-of-age story, transforming their hometown on the Texas-Mexico border into a wonderland of creative expression and activist hijinks. Filmed collaboratively over the final summer of their fleeting youth, their cinematic self-portrait celebrates the power of friendship and joy as tools of survival and resistance Grand Prize, 2023 Berlinale Generation. A Co-Presentation with Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB).

Screening will be at Haven plaza (711W 168th St NYC 10032 across from Barnes and Noble). Doors  open at 6:30 PM and films will begin at 7:30 PM,  followed by an open discussion lead by  fellow organizers and  filmmakers. Join us to celebrate summer, eat, drink, check out our t-shirt and print sale, meet new friends, promote political awareness, and build solidarity uptown!

UWF is entirely volunteer run and relies on community support to continue our work. If you have the means to donate the price of a ticket it would be an immense help towards funding our summer programming. We collect donations at the door to make this programming possible, but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. Any and all contributions help! You can also support the Film Series by getting a shirt in spanish or english

Check out our other screenings on August 2nd: Borderland and August 16th: La Cocina de Las Patronas & Elena
