Translocal Feminist Film Festival Screening 2

Join us for “Immigrant Women: resisting and re-existing”, our annual outdoor Translocal Feminist Film Series that, on its fifth run, has become a summer and uptown staple.

As the criminalization of immigrant communities intensifies and our already precarious access to basic social services is curtailed, we have curated a list of films that highlight the intersecting character of our struggles–whether those over labor rights, access to social services, and against surveillance, detention and deportation.

Our Film Series also celebrates the resilience, friendship, solidarity and hybridness of our communities and, in particular, of women and gender expansive people.

Join us August 16th for a bilingual (English/Spanish) screening of:

⭐️ La Cocina de las Patronas (2016) dir Javier Garcia, run time 66 mins

Day after day, for over 20 years, a group of women in Mexico, prepare and give meals to Central American migrants who travel atop La Bestia, a U.S.-bound freight train. They call themselves Las Patronas and their mission goes beyond humanitarian assistance, symbolizing a resistance against a system that criminalizes migrants.

☀️ Elena (2021), dir Michèle Stephenson, run time 32 minutes

In 1937, tens of thousands of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent were exterminated by the Dominican army, on the basis of anti-black racism. Fast-forward to 2013, the Dominican Republic’s Supreme Court stripped the citizenship of anyone with Haitian parents, retroactive to 1929, rendering more than 200,000 people stateless. Elena, the young protagonist of the film, and her family stand to lose their legal residency in the Dominican Republic if they don’t manage to get their documents in time. Negotiating a mountain of opaque bureaucratic processes and a racist, hostile society around, Elena becomes the face of the struggle to remain in a country built on the labor of her father and forefathers.

Screenings will be at Haven plaza (711W 168th St NYC 10032 across from Barnes and Noble). Doors  open at 7 PM and films will begin at 8 PM,  followed by an open discussion lead by  fellow organizers and  filmmakers. Join us to celebrate summer, eat, drink, check out our t-shirt and print sale, meet new friends, promote political awareness, and build solidarity uptown!

UWF is entirely volunteer run and relies on community support to continue our work. If you have the means to donate the price of a ticket it would be an immense help towards funding our summer programming. We collect donations at the door to make this programming possible, but nobody will be turned away for lack of funds. Any and all contributions help! You can also support the Film Series by getting a shirt in spanish or english

Check out our other screenings on August 2nd: Borderland and August 30th: Hummingbirds
