Rising in the Heights is a festival of free monthly outdoor public arts performances curated by Leadlights Ensemble in partnership with Word Up Community Bookshop. The festival celebrates the rich artistic contributions of Latinx and Black cultures and promotes children’s literacy through music and storytelling. 

In the first event of Rising in the Heights, local author Luz Maria Mack will read her new children’s book The Secret of the Plátano, with live music by Leadlights Ensemble. The first 10 families will receive a free copy of the featured book!

Luz Maria Mack was born in Villa Mella, Dominican Republic, and immigrated to the United States as a young child with her family. She comes from a loving and big family that is a recipe for laughter and lots of beautiful memories. Luz earned a Masters degree in Public Administration from Metropolitan College of New York and works as a healthcare professional in New York City.
