Artist Statement
I am an artist who draws on the skills handed to me by my ancestors. They were boat builders, carpenters, seamstresses, farmers, and homemakers. In art-making, labor is essential to my practice. My work is craft-based, woman’s work. I incorporate textiles, sewing, ceramic, and I include printmaking and photography to create sculptures. They are about memory true, painful, happy or idealized in an attempt at self-preservation. My work deals with things that have shaped us. It speaks to the past but also the passing of time. It is about someone who once was and is no more but still telling their story.
