My series “After the Tsunami” explores survival and the chaos that follows after a catastrophic event upends life as we know it. Survivors have to deal with how to sustain themselves in this very difficult and unpredictable situation. The waters that give us life can also take it away. In my paintings I adopt the fish as a symbol of the turbulence and the nourishment it may provide. Life may continue but in what form? Who will take care of us after tsunani?

Tó Béé imá means ‘water is life’ in the Navajo language. My series of work revolves around the meaning and power of water and the cultural relevance it has in traditional Navajo creation stories, how water is life giving and has the power to create colossal canyons and hold space in religious Navajo creation stories that tell of the visual scars on this earth from the battle grounds left by monsters fighting over water, and the eventual compromise to save the Diné. In this series, environment consists of canyons formed by water, and steel canyons formed by humans; both environments dependent on on the water that flows through.

The event is finished.
