Sugar Hill Children’s Museum Storytelling Festival

Freedom Tales: A Storytelling Festival inspired by the Works of Faith Ringgold. Join us as we explore themes of justice, freedom, activism and art through the lens of storytelling! The museum’s current exhibitions focusing on the work of artist, author and activist Faith Ringgold are the backdrop for this 3 day event that includes interactive storytelling, musical interludes, author appearances and hands on art activities all weekend long.

Storytelling Festival Schedule

  • Saturday, February 14th
    – 11:00am Michelle Washington Wilson 
    Folk Tales of the African Diaspora: Perfect for toddlers through age ten, this program invites children and their grownups to enjoy lively storytelling. Join in the fun, and celebrate a rich tradition of clever heroes and joyful learning.
    – 12:30pm April Armstrong Faith Ringgold: The Musical! Actor, storyteller and vocalist April Armstrong brings us a musical version of the children’s author and artist, Faith Ringgold’s “Tar Beach”
  • Sunday, February 15th
    – 10:00am Joy Kelly Smith – Join actor and storyteller Joy Kelly Smith as she shares character-based theater embodying the story of Rosa Parks!
  • Monday, February 16th- Free Admission Day
    – 11:00am Michael Warren reads A Beard Like My Dad
    11:30 am Nina Crews reads Not Done Yet: Shirley Chisholm’s Fight For Change
    – 12:30pm Rachael Harrington – Storyteller Rachael Harrington invites you to her story circle to learn how to tell a tale and collaborate on a group storytelling activity.
    – 1:30pm Joshua Desjardins reads The Tale of Two Princes
    – 2:00pm Zenda Walker reads Zara’s Wash Day
