The West Harlem Arts Alliance is once again proad to collaborate with the KOTA Alliance in a new CALL for Artists of ALL Ages in a new exhibition that will open in November entitled

“The Meaning of Place”
“El significado de lugar”

and will showcase and examine complex variations on the lived experiences of multigenerational residents in Harlem. By emphasizing multigenerational viewpoints, this exhibit will honor and explore the diversity and rich history of Harlem, including how age impacts our perceptions of our place in the world.

Inspired by artistic practices rooted in celebration and liberation, these Harlem artists express joy, grief, pain, and everything in between that connects us to where we live, where we come from, how our identities shaped—and are shaped by—our multifaceted sense of community.

A special youth portion of this exhibit will feature teenage artists focusing on their experiences in Harlem. While honoring the great historic legacy of Black and Latinx communities in Harlem, “The Meaning of Place” exhibit also empowers today’s young artists to express how they perceive their relationship to that legacy, along with encouraging their unique perspectives about the present and the future.

de pintar un ángel negro.” Andrés Eloy Blanco

Píntame/ Angelitos Negros consists of 999 slip-cast white clay angels and a single black clay angel. It was inspired by a poem of the same name written by the Venezuelan poet Andrés Eloy Blanco, set to music by the Mexican composer Manuel Alvarez and popularized by Mexican singer Pedro Infante. I grew up listening to his records, which my dad played often. The poem was written in response to the cries of a black Venezuelan woman who had just lost her husband and comforts herself with the notion that he is now an angel in heaven, only to be told by a relative not to be fooled because there are no such things as black angels. Even as a child, these words resonated with me. They highlighted the lack of representation of people of color in classic paintings. The religious and historical paintings by the
“Masters” hanging on churches and museum walls are marvels of inspired devotion to the divine. They are filled with images of Saints and Angels. The Eurocentric paintings rarely included subjects of color. One thousand small putti angels are installed on the gates of Audubon Terrace of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library, but only one is black. Can you find it?

Dear IJF Supporters!

We’re excited to announce the Inwood Jazz Festival will take place on Sunday, September 29th!

We have been working diligently to reschedule the Inwood Jazz Festival, following the unfortunate cancellation in August.

On September 29th, we will bring back many of the incredible jazz ensembles originally scheduled for the festival.

While still finalizing details, we wanted to let you know that we’re committed to bringing this event to our community. Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for your continued support of the Inwood Jazz Festival!
