SUMMARY:OPEN CALL for Ritual, Rites & Routine: Performing the Human Experience
DESCRIPTION:\nSubmission Deadline: Monday, September 30, 2024 (extended)SUBMISSION FORM LINK\n\n\n\nWe invite artists to submit works that explore the many aspects of the subjects: ritual, rites, and routine. Since the beginning of time, humans have sought to engage in practices or set activities — personal or collective — that define or demonstrate their beliefs, philosophies, traditions and identities. Many of these customs or acts are prescribed by a community or passed down through families. Some are more mundane as experienced through gesture or words. Others revolve around objects – some spiritual others simply revered. Identity is often shaped by these ceremonies. Through these actions, we may give order or structure to our day or perhaps they help us perform love or grief. We invite artists to consider all aspects of the subject — from the mundane to the spiritual, societal to the personal, from the individual to the larger collective. Some examples to consider may be: birth, marriage, and death ceremonies; culturally specific traditions; or even your individual morning coffee ritual!\n\n\n\nShow will run (tentatively) October 15, 2024 – January 3, 2025\n\n\n\n\ndeadline: September 30\n\n\n\nnotification: October 7\n\n\n\ndrop off work: October 14-21\n\n\n\nOpening: October 29 (TBC)\n\n\n\n\nNoMAA’s Gallery is at 4140 Broadway on the first floor of the annex, inside the United Palace.\n\n\n\nParticipating artists must live or work in Washington Heights, Inwood or West Harlem to apply.\n\n\n\nACCEPTED WORK (please read and follow the instructions carefully): \n\n\n\n\nWall-hung work must be under 90” in length or height and under 25 lbs. \n\n\n\nSculptural works that are freestanding or displayed on a pedsetal will be considered.\n\n\n\nAll accepted artworks must be delivered a professional manner, including matting and framing of works on paper.\n\n\n\nImages printed on stretched canvas will not be considered.\n\n\n\nUnframed works must be cradled, stretched or appropriately mounted (excluding textile, 3-D or odd-shaped works, which must include professional hanging hardware.) \n\n\n\nAll works must have hanging wire attached to the back (2-4” below top edge of work).\n\n\n\nAll work must be labeled on the back with the artist’s name and title. \n\n\n\nAll artwork must be available for exhibition for the duration of the show. \n\n\n\nSales of artworks are not conducted by NoMAA.
