DESCRIPTION:Film at Lincoln Center and African Film Festival, Inc., are pleased to invite you to the 29th New York African Film Festival, May 12-17! Under the banner Visions of Freedom, this year’s festival explores a range of themes including diverse and interconnected ideas of freedom relevant to Africa, the African diaspora, and the world at large. Screenings take place in FLC theaters with select films available online. Feel free to use FREDA for $5 off tickets in our theaters and VISIONS for $3 off virtual screenings. Please share with your community!\n \nYou may be interested in:\n\n\nMay 12 at 6:30pm: Opening Night Film Freda, whose title character is faced with precarious living conditions and the rise of violence in Haiti, but is determined to believe in the future of her country, followed by Q&A with Gessica Généus\nMay 13 at 6:30pm: Centerpiece Film Tug of War followed by Q&A with Amil Shivji, is a coming-of-age political love story involving a young freedom fighter set in the final years of British colonial Zanzibar.\nMay 14 at 11:30am (free event!): Cinema of Liberation: From Inception and Execution to Exhibition, a Master Class by veteran Ethiopian filmmaker, Haile Gerima will teach the role of film in propelling forth freedom movements and arming viewers to take up the mantle of change.\nMay 14 at 1:30pm: African Voices in Changing Climates: Post-Production and Social Impact Cinema at 1:30pm followed by Q&A with Linda Lilienfeld, members of Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science (CUAHSI) and Alain Gomis: A collection of short films from Mayors Make Movies, an initiative by Let’s Talk About Water, which promotes participation in water policy in cities across the African continent.\nMay 14 at 3:30pm: Above Water followed by Q&A with Aïssa Maïga: When 12-year-old Houlaye’s aunt Suri convinces an NGO to build a well their village in Niger where water is becoming increasingly scarce, it brings the promise of renewal for those men and women who, unknowingly, had been walking on water all their lives.\nMay 14 at 8:30pm: Simply Black, followed by Q&A with Jean-Pascal Zadi, follows JP, a failed 40-year-old actor, who decides to organize the first large-scale Black solidarity march in France. But he finds himself torn between his desire to be in the limelight & his commitment as an activist.\nMay 15 at 7pm: Ayaanle, whose titular character’s life is turned upside down after a series of events that lead him to become the most wanted man in Kenya, linked with terrorist activities across East Africa.
