SUMMARY:In Person Community Workshop: Japanese Paper Workshop “Peace and Harmony”
DESCRIPTION:\nArtist lead workshops geared towards ages 13 and up. Some supplies will be provided but participants are encouraged to also bring their own.\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nJapanese Paper Workshop “Peace and Harmony”\n\n\n\nOrigami (folded paper cranes), Itajime Shibori (tie-dyeing technique), tea-dyed string, hand writing\n\n\n\nIn this two part in-person workshop, participants create peace ornaments by using supple and elastic Japanese paper. Participants make their own decorative paper using a Japanese dyeing technique called Itajime shibori, and make folded paper cranes using their own handmade decorative paper. After that, each participant writes a one-word wish for the future on their decorative paper. Then they connect their wish paper and paper cranes with dyed thread. While producing their works, participants learn the characteristics of Japanese paper, including its history, and meaning. Each student also donates one paper crane to create a big, collective peace ornament.\n\n\n\nThe story of Sadako Sasaki and the Hiroshima Peace Crane will be introduced to participants.\n\n\n\nFor Ages: 13 and Up\n\n\n\nAdults are welcome to participate\n\n\n\nDates: September 11 and 18\n\n\n\nTime: 1:00 – 3:00\n\n\n\nArtist Facilitator: Yasuyo Tanaka, social practice artist and educator\n\n\n\nCommunity Workshops, and Sunday Salon are made possible with funding from West Harlem Development Corporation.\n
