Inspired by the infamous 1927 murder trial of Ruth Snyder, Machinal is a gripping drama by American journalist and playwright Sophie Treadwell. Golden Globe nominee Rebecca Hall (The Town, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) stars in this sensational new production helmed by acclaimed British director Lyndsey Turner.

It is America’s Golden Age, a time of happiness, freedom and prosperity — or is it? For one young woman in the industrial, male-dominated world of the 1920s, life is nothing like she hoped it would be. Restless and unfulfilled in a passionless marriage and an unwanted motherhood, she finds her only joy in the form of an illicit love affair. But when reality sets in and she must return to her routine existence, she’ll go to any lengths to regain her freedom.

A groundbreaking work in the landscape of American theatre, Machinal is a riveting look at the danger that can come from a life unlived.

Dear artist and member of the NoMAA community:

Greetings! I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season! As you know, Northern Manhattan is home to hundreds of artists and arts organizations. The cultural community has made an indelible mark in our neighborhood. The Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) has been working for six years to help sustain our artists and small arts organizations. NoMAA has played a significant role in the uptown movement to fortify our cultural landscape and shine a spotlight on Northern Manhattan as a destination, and thus strengthening our small businesses, museums, parks and the community at large.

We are part of our community’s amazing effort to transform northern Manhattan through the arts, and have seen our artists and arts groups at the forefront of this cultural movement. Together, we have strengthened our position and generated an influx of resources and services to the benefit of us all. Your participation has been vital to our success so far. Because you have been a visitor to an Uptown Arts Stroll event, an exhibiting artist in our Gallery, a student at a workshop or panel, or a consumer of the arts in Washington Heights and Inwood, you are a part of NoMAA’s growing family, and we thank you for your support.

In the spirit of the Holidays and in honor of our Sixth Anniversary, please give a gift to NoMAA before December 31st. Your tax-deductible contribution will directly support our programs and services for uptown artists and emerging arts organizations.

Have a happy and safe holiday season, and thank you for your ongoing commitment to the arts in northern Manhattan!

Cheers,

Sandra A. Garcia-Betancourt
Executive Director & CEO
